Why is National Parks Day commemorated

Did you know that every August 24, Costa Rica celebrates National Parks Day ? Yes! A special date that seeks to make all people aware of the immense natural heritage that we have in our country and that you must take care of. With this day it is also sought that more people meet and are encouraged to visit these beautiful natural settings.

Origin of National Parks Day

The National Parks Day has been celebrated since 1984 and is an initiative of Luis Alberto Monge; President of the Republic at that time and who decided to establish this date to consecrate the protection and maintenance of the 27 national parks and other natural spaces that exist in our country.

In addition to these 27 parks, Costa Rica has 58 wildlife refuges, 32 protected areas, 15 swampy wetland areas, 11 forest reserves, and 8 biological reserves, as well as 12 other conservation regions that protect diverse natural habitats.

In Guanacaste, there is the Las Baulas National Marine Park; cataloged as the largest in the country, and a RAMSAR site, of utmost importance to the world for its ecosystem. It has an area of 175 square kilometers in land area and 171 square kilometers in the marine sector.
